World Cyclocross Championships in Oostende – Preview with Sanne Cant und Yara Kastelijn
This weekend the World Championship Cyclocross is on the program in Oostende (Belgium). Despite the Corona situation, the World Cup will continue with the necessary precautions. We are already looking ahead with the brand new Belgian champion Sanne Cant from Team IKO-Crelan and the Dutch top rider Yara Kastelijn from Team Credisoft-Fristads.
Since this season, Sigma Sport has been the equipment partner of both teams with the ROX 12.0 GPS bicycle navigation computers and the iD.TRI GPS sports watches.
• How has the season gone so far ?
Sanne: I’ve had a pretty gloomy season, I have to be honest about that. No real boosts, apart from my 12th Belgian Champion title. But in recent weeks I have felt better and better and I enjoy being close to the podium.
Yara: I am proud of the podium places I have achieved last season. This season was, however, with many downs. I have been struggling quite a bit and had bad luck and therefore had a hard time mentally. I hope that things will all go well next Saturday.
• How do you prepare for the World Cup? There is a lot of sand in the course in Ostend, do you train extra on this? Are you still doing a team training (or training camp) together, or is everything individual?
Sanne: We regularly do team training, I have had a specific preparation with a training camp in Spain, together with Annemarie and Inge. We did some specific sand training there.
Yara: I train with my trainer all year round and I follow his instructions. During the winter season, we always train with the team together on Wednesdays. Here we train specifically on the technique and on the courses that come up during the weekend. The last few weeks I trained specifically and extra hard on the sand. The most important thing for me was to gain confidence. I think I did.
• What do you expect from the World Cup? Are there any chances of medals / victory?
Sanne: I don’t see myself as a candidate for the podium. I will see where the ship will strand in Ostend, I will start with an open mind.
Yara: The World Champs are a separate game and the one who can handle stress best wins. Also the one who is simply the strongest. I leave my chances for the World Champs open. I have put too much pressure on myself in recent weeks and I don’t want that anymore. I’m going to do my best like every week to bring out the best in myself.
• What influence does Corona have on both the preparation and the World Cup itself? There is no atmosphere and / or encouragement from the public, what does that do to the riders during the race? Does this also disrupt the preparations because there are fewer matches and / or it is not possible to travel?
Sanne: I don’t think corona has any major impact on preparation right now. This was especially the case last summer. Of course it has a major influence on the match itself. The lack of the audience is enormous. And especially now that the World Champs are in our country (Belgium), that would have made a huge difference in terms of supporters. I will definitely miss that on Saturday!
Yara: Corona has had an impact on everyone. Only one can handle it better than another. Of course we miss the audience. It always gives an extra boost, but I am only too happy that we have been allowed to and can race with strict rules this season. I think everyone followed the rules well because no positive cases have surfaced as far as I know. Furthermore, it did not really affect the preparation.
• Can you indicate how to use the ROX and / or iD.TRI?
Sanne: I use the ROX during the week, as a loyal partner during my training. And I mainly use the iD tri during competitions.
Yara: I use them during training and the competitions. I use the watch for the cx racing and running training. The little computer for road training and warming up.
